Grants from Canada Council for the Arts

1) Aboriginal Peoples Collaborative Exchange: National and International Project Grants

The Aboriginal Peoples Collaborative Exchange program assists individual aboriginal artists or aboriginal arts groups, collectives and organizations to travel to other aboriginal communities to share traditional or contemporary artistic practices that will contribute to the development of their own artistic practice.

The program fosters unique artistic relationships and networks through these collaborative exchanges among aboriginal artists across all disciplines.

Deadline for applications: November 15, 2010

Maximal grant for an individual artist: up to $5,000 for travel within Canada and $10,000 for travel outside Canada.

Maximal grant for a groups and collectives: up to $20,000 for travel within Canada and $30,000 for travel outside Canada.

Examples of Successful National Project Grants

  • A dance company from British Columbia was invited to a workshop and share its knowledge with a dance group from Ontario, and to give a public presentation of their works.
  • An invitation was extended to an Inuit women’s video collective from Igloolik to lead a one-week workshop for artists in Iqaluit.

Examples of Successful International Project Grants

  • An elder from British Columbia traveled to Alaska to attend an exhibition called « Robes of Power », where she collaborated with Chilkat and button blanket artists.
  • A basket maker from Alberta traveled to the eastern United States to work with an elder/master basket maker to learn a new technique of cane basket weaving.

2) Aboriginal Traditional Visual Art Forms Program for individuals

This program supports aboriginal artists (working individually or together), to undertake activities that contribute to the knowledge, sharing, understanding and development of aboriginal traditional art forms.

Such activities include research, as well as preservation, creation, production and dissemination (sharing the knowledge) of aboriginal peoples’ traditional visual arts forms.

Deadline for applications : October 15, 2010

Maximal grant for an individual artist: up to $20,000
