Avataq Cultural Institute is a non-profit organization, created in 1980, dedicated to protecting and promoting the Language and Culture of the Inuit of Nunavik (Northern Quebec). The organization has its head office in Inukjuak, Nunavik, and an administrative office in Westmount, Québec.
AVATAQ is currently seeking a professional and dynamic Museology Technician to work in collaboration with our existing Museology Technician.
The Museology Technician assumes responsibilities related to the management and conservation of the art and material culture collections of Avataq:
- Contribute to the development of access procedures to the Museum Reserve.
- Administer and register the entry and exit of objects from the Museum Reserve.
- Ensure safe and supervised accessibility to the Museum Reserve and the Collections.
- Ensure the protection of the Avataq collections by respecting the standards of preventive.
- Actively participate in the collection storage monitoring.
- Participates in the recording and cataloging of collections.
- Coordinate the photographing of the collection’s objects.
- Develop and animate scenarios for visits to the Museum Reserve adapted to different types of audiences.
- Develop and set up workshops for Nunavimmiut relating to the conservation and enhancement of their heritage assets.
- Design educational tools for Nunavimmiut interested in northern museology.
- Participate in the production of funding requests and monitor the various project implementation and management activities.
- Willing to perform any other related tasks useful to the operation of Avataq or its Department of Museology.
Job requirements:
- University degree in museology or a combination of work experience and training deemed relevant for the position.
- Training in history and art, archival science or archeology is an asset.
- Work experience in museology and more particularly in the field of conservation and collection management.
- Knowledge of Inuktitut and experience in a northern environment are assets.
- Bilingual (French/English) is essential.
- Superior computer knowledge (Microsoft office, File Maker Pro, database).
- Strong writing skills and excellent quality of oral communication in French and English.
- Strong interest in Nunavik cultural and natural heritage.
- Sense of organization, planning and initiative.
- Strong people skills and open-mindedness.
- Available to travel, especially in Nunavik.
Additional information:
- Working schedule: 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday (35 hours/week)
- Salary: $43,000 to $50,000 per year – Added benefits for JBNQA beneficiaries
