McCord Museum (690 Sherbrooke St. W., Montreal) in the entrance hall of the museum

What’s it about? We are students from Tukisiniarvik School in Akulivik, Nunavik. We would like to share with you our perspectives on archaeology, as well as our community and our environment. Through this project, we have trained in archaeological research and participated in the preservation and promotion of our cultural heritage; we have also been introduced to some options in post-secondary studies and employment opportunities in the field of heritage preservation.

The adventure began with the participation of 12 of us in Avataq’s archaeological field school, held on Qikirtajuaq Island during summer 2013. During the field school, we photographically recorded the archaeological activity. With the help of our teachers and inclusion of more students during the school year, we expanded this project to also record our community and surrounding environment. We have chosen photos that illustrate these subjects.

Special Event Wed. April 16th, 5 – 7 p.m. (free entry): exhibition opening night, with refreshments and snacks, in the company of 10 students from Tukisiniarvik School, the mayor of Akulivik and archaeologists from Avataq Cultural Institute in the entrance hall of the museum.

This project has been made possible through funding from Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Makivik Corporation, Air Inuit, Kativik School Board, Kativik Regional Government, Qekeirriak Landholding Corporation, the Northern Village of Akulivik, the Northern Studies Centre (Laval University) and the French Polar Institute
