ASSISTANT GENEALOGIST

For the Inuit Genealogy Program of Avataq Cultural Institute, a non-profit, Inuit organization, with a head office in Inukjuak (Nunavik) and administrative office in Westmount. The Genealogy program exists since 1988 and is aimed at providing services in that field to the members of the Inuit communities of Nunavik. The Assistant Genealogist will be supervised by the Institute genealogist and by the Head of Research, archives and documentation.

We are seeking a dynamic person who will be trained for the following tasks:

- Answer to consultation requests as well as reproduction of genealogical information;

- Update on a constant basis the genealogy data using archival information as well as current lists, entering the data on a specialized software;

- Keep updating the vocabulary of kinship, personal names and ancient nicknames;

- Provide reference on individual name spelling as well as other data for the Institute projects;

- Observes the current policy on confidentiality of information;

- Develops contacts in Nunavik communities for reference purposes;

- Answers to historical questions according to his/her knowledge.

Job requirements:

- Inuktitut and English are essential;

- College education or equivalent is an asset;

- Basic computer knowledge: Word, Excel;

- Typing in English and Inuktitut is an asset;

- Interest in developing knowledge base in the field of Inuit culture and history;

- Methodical and punctual;

- The candidate will be trained in FileMaker Pro and Reunion.

- Salary: proportional to experience (full time or part-time schedule);

- Location of work: Westmount;
