Quaqtaq

I don’t know the origin of the name QUAQTAQ. The Elders of the community will know more about it than I do.

There are 200 to 300 Inuit in Quaqtaq. This has always been a good place to wait for seals, because the village is located on a point of land that numerous marine mammals pass on their migrations. In winter, the Quaqtamiut go fishing inland from the coast of Kangirsuk. They also hunt in various different places around village.

The Inuit have always preferred eating fresh foods. Even during bad times when they were short of food, they ate only game. This is how they lived. Now they never go hungry because they can get Qallunaat food, although they have to pay for it, that’s for sure.
