"Geographical place names that have been known and used by Inuit for generations have to be recognized by the Government and appear on official topographical maps so as to demonstrate their permanence and their cultural value." Elders Conference Resolution, 1983.

The objectives of the project were to collect all Inuit place names and confirm their use among local communities. It aimed too at the official recognition of the place names by the Commission de toponymie du Québec and to encourage their daily use among Inuit. It was thus necessary to publish a Gazetteer, and place names maps. So far, 6 villages have been published, and 8 remains. An atlas and other documents are also in the plans.
