About genealogy

Background

At our first conference in 1981, the Elders entrusted the Avataq Cultural Institute with the task of conducting a study of family names in the region while reliable information was still available. The Elders expressed concern that the younger generation was starting to forget about traditional family ties, mainly due to the fact that families live separated from each other, often by considerable distance. They also feared that the community’s strong oral traditions would disappear over time if not written down. Thus, an effort was launched to record or transcribe the knowledge that has been passed down orally from generation to generation.
