Museology

At the Inuit Elders Conference in 1981, the Elders of Nunavik charged Avataq Cultural Institute with a mandate to establish a network of museums and cultural transmission centres throughout the region.

The goals were:

• to encourage the preservation of heritage in situ in order to enhance pride and identity among Inuit youth;
• to develop local expertise in Nordic museology, which would create employment and support tourism development;
• and to support and encourage vigorous cultural expression within Nunavik.
